White Industries was one of the first American made cassette type of hubs. Throughout the last twenty years, they have refined what is still, essentially the same design and adjustment system.
A 2mm allen wrench secures a sliding collar that removes any lateral play for the axle. This system makes it very unlikely to overload the bearings, which are a large and appropriate type for long term use.
Like most sealed bearing hubs, the bearing cartridges are replaced as a unit to indefinitely extend the life of the hub-set.
White's axle and driver system is strong enough to support even tandem bicycles...the company is committed to reliability. The stiffness and toughness do not come at a high cost in weight or price, both of which are moderately low.
The driver body is either titanium or steel so no special sprocket set is required, (XX1 drivers are available). The ratchet action is moderately quick at 48 points or 7.5 degrees.
The manufacturer's official warranty is one year for defects and sixty days for the bearings, which is extended by Dave's Wheels minimum warranty of two years for defects and one year for the bearings. We have only had to address true defects which are extremely rare.
Polished to a bright luster or anodized to deep colored finishes, the good looks and over the road (trail) performance are a great value for the price.
The quality of the wheel depends on the skill of the wheel builder and the quality of the components. As a client you should do some research, read reviews and find a craftsman with a record of excellence.
